Your Life Is For You, But Not About You

"How do I achieve happiness?"

This is a well sought after state. Most people want to be happy. It is innately established in us. If you don't think you want to be happy you are probably thinking in a disordered fashion, or lying to yourself. I am a believer that self denial and sacrifice can be healthy if used for God's glory but as far as desires go, we all want to be happy.

How do we achieve this?

It may seem counter intuitive but one way to reach this, is by re-framing that question. Instead of asking, "How do I achieve happiness?" Ask instead "How can I be a blessing for others so that I may help them achieve happiness?"

Granted, any blessing you give must be done with predetermined boundaries and self care. Sacrifice and self denial, yes. Harm yourself, no. (I should probably write an entire blog post on that)

Whenever you are feeling down, take the focus off of yourself and instead look to someone nearby. What act of kindness can you do for your neighbor? Sister? Stranger? Suddenly your problems are placed in perspective.

It doesn't have to be large.  A listening ear? A serene state amongst chaos? A hot meal? A loving hug?

Moment to moment seek to see who is in front of you and how you can make it about them.
Ironically, when you make your life about others, your cup will be filled! Not only will it be filled by the good feelings you receive from having a kind heart, but also from the literal kindness others begin to show you!

This is your life, it is for you and only you can live it. Enjoy it, be mindful, be present. Do care for yourself! I am not promoting a lack of self realization. You are the author of your life but make the story about showing the love that Jesus showed us, and you will be amazed at what happens.
